Home Energy Use and the Environment

Home energy use affects the environment more than most realize. Two-thirds of the energy Americans use at home is electricity, the production of which accounts for:

  • 63% of sulfur dioxide emissions that contribute to acid rain
  • 22% of NOx emissions that contribute to urban smog
  • 39% of carbon emissions that contribute to global climate change
  • 33% of mercury emissions that pose significant health risks

Energy used in a typical house releases 22,000 lbs. of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually—about twice as much as a typical car.

The Tune-uP Report provides CO2 savings from energy improvements in terms of the number of cars removed from the road. In this case, 5,500 lbs. is the equivalent of not driving for 6 months.

Energy Efficiency: A Sound Investment
Energy efficiency upgrades are unique home improvements.
Most pay for themselves through monthly energy savings when rolled into a mortgage.
Everyone can afford to invest in energy efficiency.

Investing in energy efficiency can be highly profitable

    • Returns are steady and average 25% of energy bills.
    • Returns increase as energy prices rise.
    • Returns are not taxed because you keep all the money you save. You pay taxes on ordinary investment income.
    • Your investment is recouped when you sell your home.

Tax Credit Makes Efficiency More Attractive
During 2006 and 2007 homeowners can save up to $500 on their taxes when purchasing certain home energy efficiency improvements.
