PostHeaderIcon Strategic Reengineering and the Airline Industries: an Assessment

Industrial Mechanical

No industry can survive without establishing vital linkages with other similarly-inclined industries. Market outlook and the robustness of industries are established with these linkages. Take the case of airline industries. According to Kenneth D. Pritsker of the SAM Advanced Management Journal:

Through a model based on companies competing in major segments of the air transportation industry, key relationships are identified among industry segments in a way that reconciles internal and external industry views. The model captures business processes, value chains, and interactions that generate end products in order to isolate strategic process issues and strategies to meet them.

Over the past 20 years, industries have expanded their boundaries by diversifying into new product areas, by creatively in-sourcing and outsourcing activities, and by entering into innovative cooperative agreements with companies from other industries. This expansion has almost blurred traditional industry boundaries by creating an economy of industries that are tightly interlinked.

Core elements

Aside from the diversification of manufacturing industries into different product areas where untapped markets are residing, cross-industry interactions are being seen as key for survival. Processes and so-called value-added chains are also part of the larger framework that established the position of industry and engineering in the market.

The point of this approach is that industries are no longer competing largely in the same way that they did after the nineties. In times of crisis, the only way that engineering-dependent firms and industries will survive is when they focus on integrated value chains.

Industry analysis defined

According to Pritsker:

Industry analysis typically focuses on a company’s external dimensions such as its markets, customers, and competitors. Research on industry structure has investigated the influence of economic structure on competition, the advantages of strategic industry control, and the industry factors that influence profitability (Huff, 1982). Another research stream has examined how external changes such as changing customer needs, new technology, government policy, globalization, and economic cycles affect a company’s strategy (Hambrick, 1983). The magnitude of external changes over the past 20 years has led strategic planners to develop analytical tools that use external information to help create proactive strategies. As a result, strategies have tended to minimize the importance of understanding the internal industry structure.

As we can see, Pritsker mentioned the importance of industry control. Industry control entails the complete management and regulation of all branches of production, as well as the rate of flow of inbound profits and assets. Industry control is a fertile and yet largely underdeveloped part of industrial assessment that needs a tight focus to maximize its benefits.

Understanding the value chains

The very next step during industrial assessment is determining the actual dynamics of specific value chains. Horizontal value chains create value. For example, you have fuselage and similar airline components. Another kind of value chain is the vertical value chain. According to Pritsker:

The second value chain is vertical, which provides the coordination between horizontal chains. An example of a vertical chain would be airplane design where the design activities associated with the airplane’s flaps, wings, and tail are coordinated to produce specified flight characteristics in an aircraft.

PostHeaderIcon Soccer Fundraising

Fundraising

It seems like soccer fundraising is either a season-long effort or a quick hitter that doesn’t cover all your needs.

Well, the good news is that there are some ways to make money quickly, or even all season long, that merit your consideration.

What are your fundraising goals?

Many youth sports teams and leagues want:

1 – Fundraisers that can be done with little effort
2 – Fundraisers that may be done sporadically
3 – Fundraisers that will produce significant results

Soccer fundraising programs
In this article, we’ll examine several soccer fundraisers that are quick hitting and sure to score.

The three soccer fundraising programs are:

1 – Bottled water

2 – Shot cage and radar gun

3 – Fast-food discount cards

Soccer Fundraising: Bottled Water
The first soccer fundraising program is selling bottled water. Consider for a moment that each team member will bring water to every practice and to every game. That’s at least a couple dozen bottles right there and probably a whole lot more.

Add in sales to spectators and you’ve got at least 500 bottles that could easily be sold. Sure, you can buy in bulk at a warehouse club, but you can add extra value to your soccer fundraising with private branding of your bottled water, either as a team or as a league.

The initial setup for each label is and afterward, the unique label with your logo emblazoned in color costs nothing extra. Prices for the bottled spring water are wholesale, which allows your group a comfortable 50% profit margin.

When you think about it, doesn’t it make sense to capture the wholesale-to-retail markup for your group while building team spirit at the same time?

Soccer Fundraising: Shot Cage
The second soccer fundraising program is best suited for a league-wide effort. On Picture Day, during a tournament, or at any other event with high attendance, set up a soccer “shot cage” with a radar gun to measure velocity.

Every player will want multiple chances to show just how fast their shot speeds toward the goal. You can set up contests with prizes for various age ranges, team awards, Top Gun, etc.

Soccer fundraising featuring a radar-equipped shooting cage is actually an inexpensive event to host.

Several companies rent the equipment by the week with radar gun, cage, and freight all included for less than 0.

You can also find suppliers who will put together a soccer fundraiser with a hosted radar cage and do a revenue split with your group, so there would be no upfront cost.

To maximize your soccer fundraising success, price shots in a multi-shot package, such as two for or other combinations.

Count the number of players in your league or potential shooters at a tournament event and determine if this type of soccer fundraising is right for your group.

For additional information, you can contact national supplier Absolute Amusements.

Soccer Fundraising: Fast-food Discount Cards
The third soccer fundraiser is one that your group can use once or use to raise funds all season long. And that’s selling fast food discount cards.

This is a simple item to sell. Each fundraising discount card contains a certain number of two-for-one meal packages at a well-known fast food outlet.

Participating companies include McDonalds, Burger King, Pizza Hut, Subway, Taco Bell, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Dominoes Pizza, and other large fast-food chains.

Your group purchases a certain number of these cards in advance and sells them to families or individuals that will appreciate a substantial discount. The number of two-for-one deals on each card varies by company.

Pizza Hut’s card offers a free pizza with the purchase of another pizza up to a maximum of ten. The McDonalds card seems to offer the least number of “double deals” but its also one of the most popular.

Each card retails for and costs between to . Each one features the fast-food company’s logo on the front along with a message stating that 80-90% of the price of this card goes to support your soccer fundraising group.

It’s a nice way to tap into the consumer spending revenue stream with an attractive product that benefits both parties.

Find out more about fundraising discount cards from a supplier that handles all the different cards.

These programs allow your group to reap an excellent return by offering quality products that require only moderate effort. They are guaranteed to score a goal every time out with your players and your supporters.

PostHeaderIcon Analyzing Productivity in the Metal Stampings Industry

Industrial Mechanical

On the average, the metal stamping industry has experienced very slow growth in the past three decades. We owe this perhaps to the slowdown of added capitalization and the slowdown of labor productivity because of the lack of additional capital.

Multifactor productivity on the other hand, which is a measurement of productivity based on different kinds of input was constant for the metal stampings industry for the most part. Factors such as the presence of new technologies for the workforce and economies of scale have been contributing to the constancy of productivity.

Understanding the metal stamping industry

According to Paul V. Kern in The Monthly Labor Review:

The multifactor measure accounts for the influences of the capital and intermediate purchases in the input measure and does not reflect the impact of these influences on the productivity residual. It also allows analysts to quantify the effects on labor productivity of changes in capital relative to labor and of intermediate purchases relative to labor.

Kern continues with:

Establishments in the metal stampings industry produce automotive stampings, stampings used primarily by other durable goods manufacturers, and crowns and closures used by producers of nondurable goods such as beverages and preserved fruits and vegetables. Manufacturers of automotive stampings accounted for more than 57 percent of the metal stampings industrys output in 1991. Metal stampings, riot elsewhere classified (n.e.c.) made up 40 percent of output, while crowns and closures accounted for 3 percent.

As we can see, the metal stamping industry is part of a larger arch of highly mechanized industries that are dependent on pre-formed metal. Its no small wonder that even if the profits are low or constantly low, this particular arm of industrial era has survived to this date, without being co-opted or driven to the ground completely.

Some important notes regarding capital and labor productivity

After quite a lengthy analysis, Kern and Thomas Murth (the co-author) discovered that:

The capital effect (the weighted change in the ratio of capital to labor) reflects differential movements in capital services, labor, and the capital share weight. As a result of the aforementioned trends in the growth of the capital and labor inputs, annual growth in the ratio of capital to labor surged. The intermediate purchases effect (the weighted change in the ratio of intermediate purchases to labor) can be decomposed in a similar fashion. Intermediate purchases grew 4.3 percent annually, on average.

The floundering of other industries

The relationship between capital and labor is clear from Kern and Muths explanation; however, the same cannot be said of other capital and labor-intensive industries. For example, the automotive industries around the world are putting in large amount of capital (if they can, if theyre not losing 90% of their profits like Sony is now) and yet the market is not responding.

In cases such as this, the only recourse would be state intervention; however, there would be no real timeline to look at when people anticipate the stabilization of the market with the economic stimulus. Manufacturing industries thus grind to a halt, until the market recovers once again.
